"Like any stereo receiver, we need to plug it in before we receive the various frequencies. Grounding is the process of plugging ourselves into the earth and the world around us, completing the circuit that makes us a channel of great diversity of life energies around us."

-Anodea Judith, The Wheels of Life

What is it?

Grounding means connecting to the Earth, and it is one that spans across numerous cultures, traditions, religions and spiritual practices. It allows for feelings of balance, connection, centeredness, sinking, and being anchored in the flow of the world. Many of us ground ourselves without even knowing it. Like many, I love to go outside and relax in nature and return feeling calm, centered, and connected to nature. The Earth oscillates with our biological system, bringing us into clearer coherence. Thus enhancing our mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. When grounded, organisms operate more efficiently and harmoniously and can more freely access the Earth’s stabilizing electromagnetic energy to increase vitality, health, wellness and enjoy a longer lifespan.

How to practice it

1. Go Outside

Probably the simplest thing to incorporate in your day. Even if you work all day, there are ways to give thanks to the earth. When I'm driving I will just notice how beautiful the mountains are and how lucky I am to be in this very moment. Even just appreciating the grass and sky can make you feel grounded. Just be out in nature; go to a field, a mountain, a river, a stream, a beach, a park. Be in the presence of nature, be in the presence of life.

2. Be at tree hugger...

Humans buy pieces of plastic or rubber to put onto our feet when we are out in nature, stopping the flow of energy from the Earth up into our physical matter. Go out and touch another organism to balance your energy field. Hug a tree if you want, touch flower petals, collect leaves, even just set your hands in the grass.

3. Meditation

There is a meditation on the sit, breathe, think app that I love. The meditation is something like: Visualize, see, feel, being on top of a mountain. Their roots run deep into the Earth. Feel your legs and lower body anchoring into the sand and stone of the Earth, and the feelings of peace and calmness that come with it feeling far away from busy city life. Visualize the blue being completely blue and the sun on your face. Become the base of the mountain as it grows upwards and reaches into the sky. Feel your crown as the top of the mountain, where the Earth and sky mingle. Feel the energy rising from the Earth up into your stomach, into your heart, into your face and head.

  • We have the ability to regulate and change our state of being. While indeed we are a product of our environments, constantly in the presence of other external forces, influences, and energy. We always have a choice as to how we choose to feel and how we respond to life. We have the choice to change our external and internal environment to come into a state of greater harmony and coherence.

4. Sit in water

Whether it's in A hot bath or a dip in the Jacuzzi it's relaxing, it’s cleansing. Take a hot bath with some Epsom salts mixed into the water. Water is purifying. Sitting in a warm tub of water will slough off any negative energy that’s sticking to you. The shower is okay if you don’t have a tub, but while you’re in the shower, you want to imagine all the negative thoughts and energy washing off your body and going down the drain far away. Sometimes other people’s energies can stick to us. You may come home from work with other people’s problems attached to you. Water will clear that to feel fresh and cleansed.

5. Sit in stillness

If you don't have the chance to be outside for as long as you want: be in the present moment. Sit in a chair or better yet, sit outside on the grass under a tree. Get quiet. Just look around, listen, just feel the breath filling around your bones. Something that helps me is closing my eyes and imagining all the problems as seeds on a dandelion and blow them all away. Visualize them floating away from you. Quiet your mind from wandering to the future or the past. Acknowledge that you are alright, that nothing bad is happening to you, and that you are totally at One with the world around you.
